KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — Montana authorities say a grizzly bear has killed a person in the Flathead National Forest just outside Glacier National Park.

Wednesday’s announcement that Weyerhaeuser will close its Columbia Falls lumber and plywood mills, along with its administrative offices, brought an avalanche of reaction -- none of it good.

Flathead National Forest to update forest plan, seeks public input

The forest in the Flathead is about to see some big changes – or not. It all depends on how proposed changes to the Flathead’s National Forest Plan shake out.

Supervisors for the Flathead National Forest held an open house in Kalispell on Monday to answer questions about proposed revisions to its draft forest plan.

The plan provides long-term management goals and standards, and outlines the forest’s projected timber sales.

Specialists developing a fuel reduction project to reduce fire danger for homes north of Whitefish and to protect the city’s watershed held an open house Wednesday evening.

A new kind of fast-track timber sale is being proposed to reduce fire danger around homes northwest of Whitefish.

It’s on 1,300 acres of National Forest land near the ski resort. The City of Whitefish asked the Forest Service to thin trees from the area in 2004, but was told there was no funding available.

Residents of Essex and surrounding communities are advised to prepare for possible evacuation as the Sheep Fire burns a couple miles south of town.
