BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — A Mexican citizen who feared posting bail on a misdemeanor sexual assault charge in Montana because he was the subject of a civil immigration hold was released from jail this week and, within an hour, was taken into custody by immigration officials.

Human rights groups in Montana say a Gallatin County detention center is illegally holding a man at the behest of the federal government. Arturo Valerio-Gonzales was arrested earlier this year in Four Corners on a misdemeanor sexual assault charge.

Montana’s special election to fill its empty U.S. House seat is mere days away, but election officials say many voters still aren’t sure how to vote.

"The biggest hurdle for us has been trying to combat voter confusion," says Rebecca Connors, the election administrator for Missoula County.

Local government officials said the state is unfairly shifting the cost of housing the state’s prisoners to their taxpayers.  They are asking lawmakers to restore the payments to the actual costs

The root of the problem, said Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry is the sheer number of state inmates.

Crews are continuing to fight a 13 square-mile grass fire north of Manhattan that’s threatening about 50 homes.

The fire in the Horseshoe Hills was reported around noon yesterday. Officials say it was human caused and is under investigation.

Flu Hits Six Montana Counties

Health officials have recorded twelve cases of flu in six Montana counties: Yellowstone, Gallatin, Lewis and Clark, Missoula, Beaverhead, and Broadwater. Karl Milhon with the Department of Public Health says Montana's flu season typically doesn’t begin until October.

The Associated Press is reporting that more than $800,000 has been spent on Montana's special U.S. House election in just two weeks.

A new report says the hot spot for wage growth in Montana is Gallatin county.

According to Patrick Barkey, director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana, "40% of all state growth was in Gallatin County last year, pretty amazing what’s going on there."

Barkey says the Bozeman area is economically diverse.
