This upcoming weekend could be one of the last to venture to the top of Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road from the western park entrance. The western alpine section of the road will close for two weeks starting Sept. 16.
The road will be closed between Avalanche Creek and Logan Pass so work crews can finish a pavement sealing project.
"It’s been underway this spring, this summer, and this fall, they’re wrapping up work in the alpine section of the road," park spokesperson Lauren Alley said.
Going-to-the-Sun Road is due to reopen Sept. 29, but there could be limited hiker and biker access during the closure if weather or a longer curing process pulls crews off the road.
“Folks should not plan on hiker and biker access on the road, but if there is a chance to get folks up the road, we will update our road status web page,” Alley added.
Access to Logan Pass will continue to be open from the east side of the park during the project.
Winter weather typically closes Going-to-the-Sun Road around mid-October, but it’s common for early winter storms to close the road for days at a time starting in late September.
