Montana's higher education officials will consider whether to ask for a constitutional review of a new gun law Wednesday.
Montana’s Republican-majority legislature passed a bill that expands carry of firearms on college campuses in February. Gov. Greg Gianforte promptly signed it, touting the new law as bolstering self-defense rights.
The Board of Regents, the state board that oversees Montana’s university system, is set to vote on whether to review that legislation in court. The board has heard from more than 70 people who are concerned firearm carry would be dangerous on college campuses.
The state constitution gives the Board of Regents “full power, responsibility, and authority to supervise, coordinate, manage and control the Montana university system.”
