Glacier International Airport is putting a $100 million expansion on hold. Friday's announcement attributed the delay to significant drops in air travel during the coronavirus pandemic.

The expansion will roughly triple the size of the airport, adding two gates along with screening and baggage areas for staff. Construction was billed for this spring.

In a press release, airport director Rob Ratkowski said he expects construction on the new passenger terminals to begin once air travel stabilizes later this year. Glacier International Airport typically sees 500 to 600 passengers per day in April, but that number has fallen to about 20.

While a start date hasn’t been set for construction, Ratkowski said engineering and design work will continue through the summer.
