BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — A proposal would set aside some money from a Superfund cleanup settlement to build a man-made creek through the center of Butte.
The Montana Standard reports the letter signed by Atlantic Richfield Co., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state and local officials says the plan is a "good-faith demonstration" to meet a community group's goal.
Restore Our Creek Coalition has been advocating for restoring Silver Bow Creek in town since 2015.
Spokesman Northey Tretheway says the group is thankful for receiving the letter, but will review it closely before commenting.
The letter acknowledges that challenges include securing a water source and infrastructure issues. The amount isn't specified, though the letter indicates additional funds also will be needed.
The money is contingent on all parties signing a final agreement on the Butte Hill cleanup by Aug. 12.
