The Uighur ethnic group in northwest China is increasingly making headlines in the Western press; usually in the context of a confirmed - or suspected - violent attack within China or Russia.
A senior researcher with the Uyghur Human Rights Project* is participating in the 12th AnnualCentral and Southwest Asia Conference underway at the University of Montana this week.
Prior to joining the project in 2008, Henryk Szadziewski (Hen-rick Shuh-Jeff-skee) did his graduate work in economic, social and cultural rights in the U-K.
He lived among the Uighurs from 1994 to 1997.
In this evening's feature interview with Edward O'Brien, Szadziewski offers us a primer on the sometimes confusing Uighur circumstances; take their homeland for example.
Some would point to a map and say they live in "northwest China". Others would say "East Turkestan"...
*There seem to be several different - and acceptable - ways to spell "Uighur"
