Montana lawmakers sent a letter to the state’s congressional delegates Thursday expressing concern that President Donald Trump may put taxes on solar panels imported into the United States.

Within the coming weeks President Trump could place tariffs on imported solar panels following complaints by two U.S. manufacturers saying that low-cost imports were hurting their businesses.

Legislation introduced Wednesday in the Montana House would require officials to study how renewable energy generators, like solar panels, impact the utility bills of the people who don’t have them.

Solar panels can help trim down the utility bill of homeowners, but some say it shifts that cost onto other utility consumers who don’t have personal energy generators on their home. There’s no consensus on that.

On Tuesday, Governor Steve Bullock released a plan to guide Montana’s energy future.

Local and national renewable energy advocates are saying the country needs to make sweeping changes in how they pay their energy bills. And those changes don’t involve a monthly statement from the power company.

They’ll be presenting those ideas during the fourth annual Clean Energy Fair on Saturday in Missoula.

In addition to workshops and demonstrations on the latest in residential solar, heat and wind energy systems, Ben Brouwer with Montana Renewable Energy Association, will talk about efforts to expand net-metering programs for electrical energy customers.

A New Model for Clean Energy

Jul 22, 2013

Three weeks ago, President Obama laid out his long-awaited plan to address climate change.  As he put it in a speech to college students, “I refuse to condemn your generation and future generations to a planet that’s beyond fixing.”  Key components of the President’s plan include limiting carbon pollution from power plants and increasing the production of renewable energy.  This has major implications for electric utilities across the U.S.
