A Republican representative from Kalispell says voters should be required to show a photo ID in order to cast a ballot. Representative Derek Skees introduced his proposal to change Montana’s law during a House Committee meeting today, while opponents argued the bill would make it harder for some people to vote.

For nearly two hours this morning, lawmakers in Helena listened to testimony and debated the consequences of a bill that could change the penalties for attacking a healthcare worker. The bill James O’Hara introduced to the House Judiciary committee is 28 lines long, less than a page.

State elections officials today officially certified the passage of a constitutional amendment giving more rights to crime victims known as "Marsy’s law," but it’s still unclear when the law will take effect.
 
A petition filed Friday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Montana and county attorneys aims to hold the constitutional change off until July. Advocates for the law say it should be implemented immediately.

Montana’s proposed rules for political campaigns need rewriting. That was the opinion of several public interest groups that testified during two days of public hearings Wednesday and Thursday at the state capitol. The rules proposed by Commissioner of Political Practices Jonathan Motl, define when a public interest group qualifies as a "political committee".
