A group of students from Big Sky High School in Missoula is hosting a symposium to encourage action to end climate change next week at the University of Montana.The group Free Us from Climate Chaos has booked several high profile speakers, including Bill McKibben, the co-founder of 350.org, who will appear by Skype.
Everett Bayer just graduated from Big Sky High School. He’s the spokesman for the group organizing the event.
"It's not the most uplifting subject to be discussing when we should be enjoying our first summer as young adults, but we feel like it's important to start a dialogue about where we are and what root causes got us here," says Bayer.
Bayer believes the root cause of climate change is capitalism, and he says the symposium will focus on critiquing capitalism. He hopes those attending will ask critical questions about how to address climate change.
The event is free and open to the public. It takes place Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Phyills J. Washington Education Center at the University of Montana.
