Montana Joins Lawsuit Over Immigration

Montana Attorney General Tim Fox has joined 16 other states in a lawsuit challenging President Obama's executive action on immigration.

Fox says the order, issued November 20, “is nothing but an unlawfully adopted legislative rule...and a clear violation of the separation of powers.”

Helena immigration attorney Shahid Haque-Hausrath criticized Fox, saying, “Montana is one of the states with the least number of foreign born residents,” and “There is no reason, apart from ideological bias, for Attorney General Tim Fox to be joining in this frivolous lawsuit.”

The suit was filed in Federal District Court in Texas today.

Eric Whitney is NPR's Mountain West/Great Plains Bureau Chief, and was the former news director for Montana Public Radio.
