The Montana Supreme Court has selected Sheila Stearns to lead Montana Redistricting Commission.

The Montana Supreme Court Tuesday named former state Commissioner of Higher Education Sheila Stearns to lead the committee in charge of re-drawing the boundaries of Montana’s legislative districts.

Stearns was picked by the state high court after the two Democrats and two Republicans on the Montana 2020 Redistricting Commission deadlocked on who should be their fifth and final member.

The University of Montana is taking a hard look at its priorities. University of Montana officials met Friday to take a hard look at the recommendations from a task force reviewing those budgeting and enrollment priorities.

The University of Montana’s funding is tied to enrollment, and declining enrollment has proven to be a significant financial challenge over the last several years. The school is now reevaluating its academic and administrative priorities.

University of Montana officials have revealed details of a new voluntary severance package designed to entice eligible staffers to leave UM. UM this year has already presented two buyout rounds to faculty.

Judging by the number and content of questions asked during a campus meeting Wednesday, the idea seems to have stirred up some interest.
