Two of the three Republican primary candidates for governor met in Helena Tuesday night for a debate focused on jobs and the economy.

Attorney General Tim Fox and State Sen. Albert Olszewski stood in an event hall at Carroll College for just under an hour making their pitch to GOP voters.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton on Tuesday defended his decision to award an emergency $265,000 contract to a friend's printing company, saying he did what was right for state voters.

Stapleton, a Republican, testified before the State Administration and Veterans Affairs Committee, which oversees his office, about the contract awarded to former state Republican Party Executive Director Jake Eaton.

Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton is firing back at Attorney General Tim Fox for saying Stapleton needlessly hired a Republican political consultant's wife to represent him instead of using lawyers from the attorney general's office.

Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton faced criticism this week for awarding a $265,000 contract to a political ally. The Associated Press reported that Stapleton paid longtime political ally Jake Eaton $265,000 for a rush printing job to fix mistakes in the Montana state voter information pamphlet.

Now, MTPR has learned that Stapleton has other financial ties to Eaton, and has also hired Eaton's wife to defend the Secretary of State’s office in court.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana's Republican secretary of state told officials to award an emergency $265,000 contract to a printing company owned by a Republican political consultant and former executive of the state GOP for mailers that would fix mistakes in the state's election guide.

In late April, as the Montana Legislature was getting ready to adjourn, the state Senate confirmed Jonathan Motl as Commissioner of Political Practices, a job he’s held since being appointed by Democratic Governor Steve Bullock in 2013. Montana has had four different Political Practices Commissioners since 2011, and Motl is the first in that time to win Senate confirmation, against harsh criticism from some Republicans.
