Musician's Spotlight: Catalyst Quartet

Catalyst Quartet
Catalyst Quartet

Violinist Karla Donehew Perez always wanted to be in a quartet as opposed to a symphonic player or soloist. She got her wish and much more as a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet. Program host John Floridis interviewed Karla by phone in the late Spring of 2021 to talk about her career, the group’s journey and their most recent recording “Uncovered.”

The first of a multi-volume set, Volume 1 features the works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor including his Quintet in G minor for Piano and Strings with pianist Stewart Goodyear, Fantasiestück, and Quintet in F sharp minor with clarinetist Anthony McGill.

Hailed by The New York Times at its Carnegie Hall debut as “invariably energetic and finely burnished… playing with earthy vigor,” the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet was founded by the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Organization in 2010. The ensemble believes in the unity that can be achieved through music and imagines their programs and projects with this in mind, redefining and reimagining the classical music experience.

John Floridis, the host and producer of Musician's Spotlight, has been with Montana Public Radio since 1997. He has interviewed over 200 musicians during that time. He is also an independent recording and performing artist in his own right and a former registered music therapist.
