Butte-Silver Bow County is the latest local jurisdiction in Montana looking to add a local excise tax on cannabis sales.

Butte-Silver Bow commissioners have approved a pair of ballot questions to add to the June primary ballot asking county residents to consider a 3% local-option excise tax on recreational and medical marijuana sales in the county

J.P. Gallager is the chief executive Officer for Butte-Silver Bow County.

"With this 3% we get to choose what that's going to do and we really look at using it for the supportive services that that we need so desperately here in Butte-Silver Bow, as we talked about for mental health services, addiction prevention, those type of things. And that's what we're looking to use this addition funding for."

The local option tax on recreational sales will be on top of a state-mandated 20% tax.

About 65% of voters in Butte-Silver Bow supported the statewide initiative in 2020 to legalize sales of recreational marijuana in Montana.

In November, Missoula, Park and Yellowstone counties each passed a 3% local tax on recreational marijuana.

Czelsi Gómez, a spokeswoman for the the Montana Department of Revenue, said Lewis and Clark County will also have voters decide whether to impose local-option sales taxes on marijuana products sold in the county in the June primary election. Meanwhile, in Gallatin County, commissioners are set to formally consider whether to do the same next month.
