State Rushes To Distribute Millions In Federal COVID Funds Before Deadline

Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Wednesday that a third round of federal stimulus payouts will be distributed to Montana cities and towns.

The state will release more than $17 million to municipalities across the state, with amounts ranging from about $10,000 for Bearcreek to the $6.3 million going to Bozeman.

The announcement comes after the state sent out two rounds of funding totalling more than $20 million last week. Guidelines for distribution of the funds were set by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and all monies must be sent out by June 30.

Local governments can use the money to deal with COVID-19 related impacts, and to invest in public works projects. The funds are part of the roughly $2 billion Montana received through the federal American Rescue Plan Act.

While some of the money is already allocated, lawmakers are working to divvy up the rest into broadband infrastructure, economic development, communications and health and human services.
