Glacier National Park Monday announced that rangers euthanized a black bear in the Lake McDonald Lodge area after finding it had broken into a concession employee housing cabin. Nobody was present in the cabin at the time. The bear matched the description and photos of a bear who had been reported multiple times in the area since Memorial Day weekend.

On Thursday Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials captured a 3-year-old, 195-pound male grizzly north of Kalispell that repeatedly broke into chicken coops and killed numerous chickens over several days. Officials concluded the bear posed a risk to public safety and euthanized it after consulting with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

About 150 miles away in northern Idaho, officials say they euthanized a 240-pound male grizzly Saturday after it killed seven sheep. Officials say the same bear was captured in 2018 and relocated to the Cabinet Mountains near the Idaho-Montana border after harassing livestock and raiding orchards.

Grizzly bears in the Lower 48 states are protected as a threatened species.
