HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The Helena City Commission voted to accept a donated fountain to replace the old Hill Park Confederate Fountain that was removed in 2017.
The Helena Independent Record reports Helena residents chose the design of the Equity Fountain. California landscape architect James Dinh won with the "Sphere of Interconnectedness," which features a millstone topped by a sphere of stainless steel strips.
Words adorn the edge of the millstone, some of which, according to interim city manager Dennis Taylor, will be scripted in foreign and Native languages.
Dinh plans to visit Helena before the fountain's scheduled July installation date.
Helena resident Ron Waterman, who led the charge to replace the old Hill Park Confederate Fountain, says he hopes the "community fountain will share in the same values of equity and equality, diversity, respect, generosity and compassion, tolerance, service, peace and justice."
