Flathead County Commissioners Friday approved plans for a 100-spot RV park outside the west entrance to Glacier National Park.

With a unanimous vote by the commissioners, the company Glacier Park, Inc., is now cleared to move forward with its plan to develop 25 cabins and a 102-spot recreational vehicle campground adjacent to the village of West Glacier outside the western entrance to the park.

The county received more than 100 pages of public comment that raised concerns about increased traffic, impacts to wildlife corridors and water quality, and potential air, light and noise pollution. County officials said GPI’s proposal is in line with previously-approved county growth plans for the area.

The company says it hopes to have at least some of the RV sites and cabins up and running by next summer.

The company is still seeking approval from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation for water rights, and the state Department of Environmental Quality for a wastewater permit.

As part of the county’s approval, the company will have to build a paved 6-foot-wide bike and walking path connecting the RV park to the center of West Glacier. The RV park will also use dark sky friendly lighting, enforce quiet hours between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., restrict dogs to one per site, and require bear proof food storage.
