Melissa Romano is the Democratic candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction.

This year, voters will decide who will become the next leader of Montana’s education system. Current Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau, a Democrat, has termed out of the position. The Democrats have fielded Helena grade-school teacher Melissa Romano to run to succeed her. Romano sat down with Montana Public Radio’s Capitol Reporter Corin Cates-Carney.

Melissa Romano is the Democratic candidate for superintendent of public instruction. She’s running against Elsie Arntzen, a Republican senator from Billings.

Corin Cates-Carney was the Montana Public Radio news director from early 2020 to mid 2025 after spending more than five years living and reporting across Western and Central Montana.
