Montana House Approves Tanning Bed Restrictions For Teens

The Montana House Friday approved a bill to ban teenagers from using commercial tanning beds without their parents’ permission.

Among those speaking in favor was Bozeman Republican Matthew Monforton, who said he was making an exception to his usual stand against government regulation.

“Our kids and especially our girls are facing indescribable pressures to be people that they’re not, and normally I abhor government regulation. This is an area where I feel differently and I’m going to vote yes, thank you,” Monforton said.

House Bill 130, sponsored by Missoula Democrat Ellie Boldman Hill, aims to reduce the risk of melanoma, the second most common cancer among teenagers and young adults.

A competing bill, by Billings Republican Senator Roger Webb, would simply ban anyone under 18 from using tanning facilities.  That bill is still awaiting a committee hearing.
