The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the release of the first Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the National Bison Range on the Flathead Indian Reservation today. It comes after two years of public comments.

The  Plan  is now in its final stages. On Friday, it will be published in the Federal Register, opening the last comment period for the document.

Supporters of an alternative proposal to settle water rights claims on and around the Flathead Reservation have released a framework for what they would like to see in federal legislation. Meanwhile, their proposal is drawing condemnation and curiosity across the state.

A five-acre fire started around 4 p.m. Wednesday near Alberton. Lolo National Forest spokesperson Boyd Hartwig says the fire is burning mostly grass, and that it’s not yet known if the fire is human-caused.

A group tasked by the legislature to protect water quality in the Flathead Valley is in jeopardy after its funding was cut during Montana’s special legislative session in November and its executive director was terminated in February.

On Wednesday the Flathead Basin Commission will meet in Pablo and reassess its future.
