Writing for television is fun – if you’re really good at it

Ron Fitzgerald has written for the hit network television series "Friday Night Lights" and the Showtime hit series "Weeds" but he started his writing career as a playwright.

Fitzgerald is in Missoula this week to participate in the annual Missoula Colony sponsored by the Montana Repertory Theater. The colony is an annual weeklong workshop for aspiring stage and screen writers. In this feature interview, Fitzgerald talks with News Director Sally Mauk about starting his career as a playwright in New York and then moving into TV.

"Going into a show like WEEDS where I was a fan already, I'm thinking, man I better not do something to mess this up."

Retired in 2014 but still a presence at MTPR, Sally Mauk is a University of Kansas graduate and former wilderness ranger who has reported on everything from the Legislature to forest fires.
