Montana lawmakers will consider overriding eight of Gov. Greg Gianforte’s vetoes from the 2021 legislative session. The bills Gianforte vetoed meet the threshold for an automatic poll of lawmakers asking if they’d like to reverse the governor’s decision.

If a bill passes the Legislature with at least two-thirds majority on a final vote and is then vetoed by the governor, the Secretary of State must poll members.

The polls in progress concern bills that aim to study COVID-19 era rules and regulations, to expand the state’s fish and wildlife commission and to incentivize builders to build affordable housing, among other proposals.

It takes a two-thirds majority vote to override a veto. Lawmakers have 30 days to respond to the polls.

The Legislature already overturned one of Gianforte’s vetoes in April. That law gives the Legislature more power to repeal rules set forth by state agencies.
