Don Carlo

04/11/2015 - Approximate running time 4 hrs. 35 min.

Dynamic maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Verdi’s ambitious score with a stand-out cast in Nicholas Hytner’s handsome production. Yonghoon Lee sings the title role, with Barbara Frittoli, Ekaterina Gubanova, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, James Morris, and Ferruccio Furlanetto, reprising his definitive portrayal of King Philip.

Co-production of the Metropolitan Opera; Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London; and the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet

"Don Carlo gets a gripping revival... The French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin was in the pit, where he belongs as often as the company can recruit him... [He] subtly drew nuanced details, glowing sound and sure pacing from the great Met orchestra in this long, challenging Verdi masterpiece." (New York Times)

Yonghoon Lee brings "melting sound, evenness throughout his range and sensitive feeling for the Verdi style" to the title role. Barbara Frittoli as Elisabeth sings "with rich body, pliant phrasing and some big top notes." As King Phillip, "[Ferruccio] Furlanetto's full-bodied, elegant singing was chilling one moment and aching the next." Dmitri Hvorostovsky "brought velvety legato phrasing, virile sound and his distinctive smoky timbre to Rodrigo... Ekaterina Gubanova's dark, powerful voice suits Princess Eboli." (New York Times)
