Great Falls Public Schools isshifting to remote learning for the remainder of the week after a spike in COVID-19 cases over the weekend.
The district made the decision based on a recommendation from the COVID-19 task force.
As of Monday afternoon, GFPS says there are 185 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among students and staff — and not enough substitutes to cover the 125 staff members out because of COVID-19 related illness, leaving more than 50 classrooms without instructors.
More than 10,100 students will move to remote learning beginning Tuesday. The district says it will continue to monitor the infection rate and hopes to resume in-person classes on Jan. 18, the day after the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday.
Numbers from the state health department show Cascade County reported 137 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing its active case count to 417.
