More COVID-19 Cases From Variant Strains Detected In Montana

Three cases of COVID-19 caused by a variant strain first identified in Brazil have been found in Montana, adding to the state’s growing count of variant cases.

The Montana health department’s weekly variant report from Friday shows the P.1 variant was identified in one person each from Big Horn, Gallatin and Meagher counties.

A case caused by the variant first identified in India was also identified in Lewis and Clark County.

The state’s latest report shows 188 cases caused by variants. The vast majority are labeled variants of concern by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization -- a two on a three tiered scale.

The state’s report says its data may not reflect a standardized, statewide sample of variants.

The cases in the reports are undated and variant testing results have lagged in the past.
