Gallatin County Leads The State In Wage Growth

The Associated Press is reporting that more than $800,000 has been spent on Montana's special U.S. House election in just two weeks.

A new report says the hot spot for wage growth in Montana is Gallatin county.

According to Patrick Barkey, director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana, "40% of all state growth was in Gallatin County last year, pretty amazing what’s going on there."

Barkey says the Bozeman area is economically diverse.

"Well, what’s going on in Gallatin County is that they’re first out of the gate when it comes to housing recovery. It’s the only part of the state that really has a full-blown residential construction recovery happening. You’ve got a lot of high tech manufacturing development, and MSU’s doing very well."

Barkey says healthy tourism numbers are helping Gallatin County, too. The Bureau of Business and Economic Research issued their annual state economic outlook today in Missoula.

Eric Whitney is NPR's Mountain West/Great Plains Bureau Chief, and was the former news director for Montana Public Radio.
