STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:
It's MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm Steve Inskeep.
MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:
And I'm Michel Martin. Good morning.
President Trump says a person suspected of shooting Charlie Kirk is now in custody.
(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him...
UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Right now?
TRUMP: ...In custody. Yeah. In custody. Everyone did a great job. We worked with the local police, the governor. Everybody did a great job.
MARTIN: The president made the surprise announcement on the Fox News program, "Fox & Friends." We're going to bring you as much information as we have as we get it, but right now, NPR's Marisa Peñaloza is on the campus at Utah Valley University, where a press briefing has just begun - or it's about to begin. Marisa, what do we know?
MARISA PEÑALOZA, BYLINE: Well, we don't know much. We're in the same place because right now, I'm at the site of the press conference. It's about to begin in a few minutes, and we are supposed to learn more details.
MARTIN: What can you tell us about the investigation so far? I mean, I think a lot of people have seen by now news video showing surveillance video from some different angles showing a person that certainly has been of interest. Can you tell us anything about what the authorities have said about their investigation or where they were getting their information, anything of that sort?
PEÑALOZA: No, I really cannot speak about that because not much information has been - has come out. I did see that President Trump is saying that the shooter has been caught, but we are going to learn details at this press conference that is about to begin.
MARTIN: OK. That is NPR's Marisa Peñaloza. She's in Orem, Utah. Marisa, come back and tell us what you know when the authorities release more information. Thanks so much for joining us.
PEÑALOZA: Thank you, Michel. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
