Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton is defending his decision to award a $265,000 contract to a friend, saying his office did what was right for the voters.

State environmental regulators have given the OK to expanding a coal mine in southeastern Montana and set a $13.7 million cleanup bond.

U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke told the Associated Press today that the federal government plans to appeal a federal court ruling allowing oil and gas drilling in the Badger-Two Medicine area outside Glacier National Park.
