The widespread precipitation gracing Montana has at least tapped the brakes on the 2018 fire season. But National Weather Service Meteorologist Trent Smith says it’s not the full-stop event everybody’s hoping for.

A fast-growing wildfire discovered Thursday night in the northeastern part of Glacier National Park has led to the closure of nearly all of neighboring Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada.

Wildfire activity has moderated in Western Montana in the wake of wet and cool weather earlier this week, but crews remain hard at work as temperatures start to rise again .

In Glacier National Park the Howe Ridge Fire is now estimated at more than 11,000 acres. Despite continued growth, though, fire managers say they’re making good progress shoring up protections along Going-To-The-Sun Road.
