Many Montana schools faced defeat at the ballot box this May as they requested taxpayer dollars to pay for upgrades that keep students and staff safe. Two Missoula-area schools that say they won’t be able to keep their security up to date.

Montana schools are short on teachers. The state education department’s hiring page showed more than 400 open jobs two months into the school year. Education leaders are experimenting with ways to recruit teachers for the long-haul, and at least one project is showing promise.
