Montana Lawmakers have advanced a bill that would ban transgender women from competing in women's interscholastic sports.
The Montana House of Representatives passed House Bill 112 on a 61-38 vote. A handful of Republicans crossed the aisle to vote with Democrats against the policy.
Republican Rep. John Fuller is carrying the bill and said he believes it’s unfair for transgender women to compete with other women. Democrats, health care professionals and human rights organizations adamantly opposed the legislation.
It will now move onto the state Senate for consideration.
House Bill 113, also carried by Fuller, would have restricted doctors from providing gender affirming care to trans youth. It failed a third vote in the House Tuesday after a handful of Republicans changed their minds to vote against it. Fuller made a motion to reconsider the bill Wednesday and it failed.
