In 2013, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Montana, then a not-for-profit corporation, was sold to Health Care Services Corp, a Chicago-based insurance company. Under state law, the sale assets were transferred to a charitable trust, the Montana Healthcare Foundation, to be managed for the public benefit. To date, the MHCF has roughly $80 million in assets.
Dr. Aaron Wernham, CEO of the Montana Healthcare Foundation, discusses the roots of some of Montana’s most challenging health issues, as well as MHCF’s grant opportunities, and other strategies for partnering with Montana communities to improve health and wellbeing.
"We've learned a lot about the health needs of the state and have identified some very good opportunities to address those needs, but we know that there's a lot more to understand about who is out there doing this work, the coalitions and groups already doing that work for whom a grant would help achieve another level of success."
