Popular police fiction rarely revolves around women, but the short stories in Anything You Say Can and Will Be Used Against You capture police work exclusively from the female point of view.
NPR's Scott Simon speaks with the book's author, Laurie Lynn Drummond, about the 10 short stories told from the perspective of five fictional Baton Rouge policewomen.
Drummond, currently a writing teacher at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, spent eight years on the beat as a uniformed officer for the Baton Rouge Police Department. Her experiences on the force clearly inform her prose, described by reviewers as gritty and realistic.
