State Rep. Frank Fleming of Billings has died after what GOP leaders called a “long and difficult health battle.”

Fleming, a Republican, was appointed to the state Legislature in 2018 and was in the middle of his second term at the time of his death at age 68.

GOP legislative leaders released a statement saying Fleming was dedicated to serving the Billings community and the state of Montana. Before working as a legislator, Fleming was a chief federal probation officer and a manager at a job service.

Fleming brought bills focused on the criminal justice system, and served on the House Judiciary Committee during the 2021 legislative session.

Gov. Greg Gianforte ordered the flags at the state capitol be flown at half-staff Tuesday to recognize the representative.
