Federal health officials have approved a second COVID-19 booster shot for those 50 years-old and older as well as certain immunocompromised people. The state health department says the approval means about 400,000 Montanans can get another shot.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed off on the recommendation, saying those eligible for the second booster shot can get one four months after their third shot in order to boost waning immunity.

According to state data, vaccination rates for Montanans over the age of 50 are above the state average of 55%.
