Montana COVID-19 cases by diagnosis date, as of Feb. 8, 2022.

COVID-19 cases across Montana have fallen significantly over the past week.

The numbers of active COVID-19 cases statewide Tuesday were roughly half of what they were just a week ago, falling from a little over 17,000 to roughly 8,000 active cases.

The omicron variant set off a wave of new cases beginning in early January with the state adding some of the highest daily case numbers since the start of the pandemic. However, fewer Montanans have been hospitalized compared to past surges.

Despite the decline in cases over the past week, COVID hospitalizations have remained in the low 300s. Transmission rates across the state are also still considered high by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
