Avalanche danger is growing across western Montana

An avalanche warning is in effect in the Centennial mountain range between southwest Montana and Idaho. The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center says avalanche danger is high on all slopes in the area and natural and human-triggered slides are very likely.

The Gallatin Avalanche Center says there is also considerable avalanche danger in the Southern Madison and Southern Gallatin ranges.

According to the Flathead Avalanche Center there is considerable avalanche danger in the Swan Range.

The first U.S. avalanche fatality of this season was reported over the weekend. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center database says six backcountry travelers were caught and one died in Washington state.
