DNA results confirm the bear killed by state wildlife officials July 9 was the same bear who fatally attacked a camper in Ovando just over a week ago.

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks made that announcement Wednesday.

Officials say DNA samples from the bear, a saliva sample at the scene of the attack and samples from two chicken coops that were raided in the area all match up.

The bear killed 65-year-old Leah Lokan early in the morning of July 6.

Officials encourage recreationists planning to visit bear country to first visit FWP’s Bear Aware webpage.
