The Montana Heritage Center

Two committees have been appointed for the building of a new Montana Heritage Center.

Department of Administration Director John Lewis appointed 12 Montanans for their backgrounds, experience and affiliations with Helena to analyze the best location and design for the new center.

Communications Director Amber Conger said, “We are committed to ensuring a smooth process, a transparent process, and everyone is very excited about moving forward to get this building opened.”

Raising funds for the Heritage Center began in 2005, but this spring a bill was passed in the Montana Legislature to fill gaps in funding and catalyze the project.

There is currently no specific timeline for opening a new center.

Potential sites will be presented to Director Lewis, who has the final say, this winter. After a location is selected for the new Center, Lewis and the committee will develop a design for the new building.

The Montana Heritage Center is home to the Montana Historical Society, which was established in 1865 and promotes Montana’s cultural heritage.
