Yellowstone National Park has closed the popular Boiling River Trail due to extreme muddy conditions.

Park spokesperson Vicki Regula says the closure is meant to protect visitors and vegetation.

"The trail is currently impassable due to standing water and large areas of deep, slippery mud," Regula says.

The Boiling River Trail was also closed last year from March 22 through July 14 due to similar conditions.

The trail will reopen when conditions improve.
