Montana’s Washington delegation today announced the Whitefish Lake Watershed Project will receive $2 million in federal funding.

The project proposes a 1,500 acre conservation easement on private land northwest of the lake to protect wildlife habitat, provide public access for hunting and recreation, ensure future timber production, and protect the city’s water supply.

Earlier this year, the project had an estimated price tag of $40 million.

The $2 million in funding announced today comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It finalizes a portion of the conservation easement on Weyerhaeuser Company property.
