The transgendered have unique healthcare needs that can be challenging for both the patient and - in some cases - the physician.A first-of-its-kind-for-Montana health care conference, held recently in Missoula, drew over 100 participants from across the country. The Gender Expansion Conference included medical and mental health care professionals, transgendered individuals, their parents and advocates.

The conference was sponsored by Missoula's Blue Mountain Clinic with assistance from the Pride Foundation and the Gender Expansion Project.

In this feature interview, Blue Mountain's Lynsey Bourke and conference participant Erin Armstrong, discuss the sometimes complicated health care - and personal -  issues facing the transgendered. First, Burke explains the difference between "sex" and "gender"
