One man is dead in Missoula after what local law enforcement is calling an “officer-involved” shooting.
The Montana Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating Thursday’s early morning shooting resulting in the death of a 21-year-old man. Limited information is being released.
In a pre-recorded video statement to local press, Missoula Police Chief Jaeson White says the man, suspected of driving under the influence, was pulled over but then took off leading to a high-speed chase.
The chase ended near the intersection of Stephens Avenue and Beckwith Street, where, according to White:
“The suspect produced a handgun and fired. Our officer returned fire. Immediately afterwards, officers on scene rendered medical aid and called for assistance from EMS.”
Neither the police officer nor driver’s names were released.
Officials say the man was taken to St. Patrick Hospital where he later died.
When the state’s investigation is complete, investigators will present the case to the Missoula County Attorney’s office. The county coroner and the county attorney will then schedule an inquest.
