The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is celebrating local food in Butte at the Summer Sosten Fest in June.
“The highlight of the Summer Sosten Fest is going to be the first annual Great Butte Pasty Throwdown,” says NCAT Executive Director Steve Thompson in avideoposted on the Sosten Fest website.
‘Sosten’ means ‘food’ or sustenance’ in Cornish. Competitors are encouraged to use local food in their pasties as a way to support local growers and sellers, as well as reduce the distance the ingredients have to travel.
Individuals and restaurants are able to enter. NCAT is partnering with the Butte Chamber of Commerce to invite neighboring communities to the competition.
“Bring it to Butte. Bring it on. Let’s see what you’ve got," Thompson says.
Sosten Fest will also feature a seed and plant sale, where attendees can pick out locally grown plants well-adapted to growing in Butte, along with tours of NCAT’s small-scale intensive farm.
There will also be activities for kids, live music, local beer and drinks, and demonstrations about sustainable farming, energy, and communities.
The free festival will take place on June 8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the NCAT campus in Butte.
