Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton is defending his decision to award a $265,000 contract to a friend, saying his office did what was right for the voters.

State environmental regulators have given the OK to expanding a coal mine in southeastern Montana and set a $13.7 million cleanup bond.

Hunters in northwest Montana improved their success rate last weekend. Hunters harvested 64 buck mule deer last weekend, compared to the 26 harvested this time last year.
