The Montana Environmental Review Board has rejected a permit application for expansion of a coal mine in the Bull Mountains. Board members agreed this afternoon with the Montana Environmental Information Center that the state Department of Environmental Quality's decision to issue the permit to Signal Peak Energy was flawed.

A house in Milltown erupted in flames around 4:30 this morning. Both the East Missoula Fire crew and the Missoula Rural Fire responded immediately.Initial reports of the fire say residents reported smoke coming from a wall inside the house. When crews arrived, flames and smoke could be seen from the outside and were threatening the neighboring house. By 7:00 a.m., the fire was contained.  

The Yellowstone Association and the Yellowstone Park Foundation are joining forces to become a new nonprofit organization to better support the needs of Yellowstone National Park.

Idaho wildlife officials say bears have been more active in human areas this year than in the past, and warn that residents should avoid providing food to the animals and encouraging them.

Mission Valley Power customers on the Flathead Indian Reservation will see a power outage late Saturday Night into early Sunday morning.  The electricity’s being cut for eight hours, starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, so the Bonneville Power Administration can replace poles and wires that connect it to the MVP substation.

A 49-year-old woman who was moving cattle along U.S. Highway 12 near Melstone was killed when her four-wheeler was struck by a pickup.

Faculty members at Montana State University are debating the worth of a hospitality management degree. The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that off-campus restaurateurs, civic leaders, university officials and faculty members squared off Wednesday at the Faculty Senate to discuss adding the degree program.
