The Missoula chief of police says state investigators are looking into a fatal shooting by police. Missoula police gave new details on the shooting during a press conference Thursday.

Missoula police say an officer fired at Jesse James Kale Brown after responding to an active domestic assault assault call on November 7. Police say Brown was armed with a kitchen knife and attacked officers. Brown died at the scene.

During a press conference, Police Chief Jaeson White declined to name any officers involved or to release body cam footage, citing the ongoing investigations.

White said an officer shot at Brown after a taser was ineffective at subduing him.

"Fearing for his own life and safety, the officer fired four rounds from his department-issued weapon."

A group of protesters gathered outside of the police department a few days after the incident to demand an investigation into the shooting death.

Once the Department of Criminal Investigations has concluded its investigation it will go to the Missoula County Attorney's office where the cause of death will be investigated. The Missoula Police Department is also conducting an administrative investigation into the incident.
