Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is accepting public comment on a proposed management plan for wildlife habitat along the north shore of Flathead Lake south of Kalispell.

This would be the first management plan for the agency’s 400 acre North Shore Wildlife Management Area, which serves as a migratory stopover point for some 200 bird species. The agency acquired the land in three phases between 2008 and 2016.

Franz Ingelfinger is a restoration ecologist with FWP.

"I think it does help codify what we are doing right now, but it also clearly explains a couple of the strategies as well as our rationale, and it provides a opportunity for the public to comment and help provide direction as well."

The proposed plan recommends enhancing wetlands, expanding forested areas, creating permanent cover and using active agricultural leases to improve wildlife habitat, water quality and soil health.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks is accepting public comment on the proposed management plan through January 5. Find more information about the plan and comment here.
